City Distances Our site uses coordinates of certain cities and locations for different purposes, such as the distance a city is from a particular storm. The calculated distance from the center position of the storm or an observation point to any location (usually a city) is only an estimate. This figure is not given by the NHC. It is independently calculated. Using the coordinates of the tropical entity given by the NHC or observation coordinates from a reconnaissance flight, we calculate the distance from that coordinate to the nearest major city in our database. For locations in the United States, we use the coordinates given by the U.S. Census Bureau's 2000 census. (Except the coordinates for Cape Hatteras, NC, USA, which is actually for the lighthouse, which comes from the National Park Service.) For other locations around the Atlantic basin, we used Google Earth, which we found to be highly reliable. When compared with other data, Google Earth was usually the most accurate. In fact, Google Earth seemed to be even more accurate for some locations in the United States, though we decided to go with was officially listed at the U.S. Census Bureau. The distance between two coordinates is calculated using the Haversine Formula. The value of the earth's radius used in this calculation is 3,963.190 miles (3,443.918 nautical miles), which makes distances more accurate the closer both points are to the equator. The value of Π (Pi) used is 3.14159265. However, the values are still only estimates and will probably differ slightly from any calculation that you see from the National Hurricane Center. A city, like a storm, is not a single point. Our city coordinates may be several miles off from the actual official city center. They may be off by as much 5 miles, possibly more. In addition to that, the formula used to calculate the distance between two points on the Earth will probably be off by several miles. Please use our distance calculations as an approximation only. Usually, the most recognized English form of each location is what is listed on this site. For example, rather than "La Habana, Cuba," we give the city name as "Havana, Cuba." For information about how the "nice wind" direction is calculated, click here. Below is the actual coordinates that we use for each location. Our calculations do not always simply choose the nearest city. Some cities are less known than others. If a storm or observation coordinates happen to be closest to a small city, we usually give the location of the largest city it is near until very close to the smaller city. For example, if we were to measure a point in the middle of the Atlantic, we would do so to the nearest large city. If we were quite close to the Antilles, we would instead measure the distance to the nearest small island country or dependency. We include a lot of large cities, though we don't include every major city. The goal was to find a mixture of cities that were spread as evenly apart as possible. To do this, some major cities have been left out. In addition, preference is often given to cities that are closer to the coast and that are more well known than a city that might be inland or be larger and less known.
